Our entire 2021 summer road trip is available for download!
If you follow us on Instagram, you know that we had a BIG summer road tripping around the US. We left our home in Massachusetts and spent 5 weeks driving 8603 miles to visit 5 National Parks, 13 state parks, 2 National Monuments, 2 National Lakeshores, hiking almost 100 miles and taking in as much beauty as we possibly could. We spent most of our nights dispersed camping (free camping outside of a traditional campground) and cooked almost all our own food. Our route took us as west through Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming and Idaho where we turned around and headed east through Salt Lake City, Utah, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and both peninsulas of Michigan before our last 2 day driving push to get back home.
I shared most of our road trip on Instagram stories and saved them to 5 highlight reels. Enough people asked for specific details all along our route that I have made our entire road trip route available for download! I spent the months leading up to the road trip researching campsites, bookmarking hikes, checking out state parks, and game planning a route around the US that would let us hit as many bucket-list spots as possible in the limited time we had. I have included all that research for you in one convenient place.
In our 2021 Road Trip Itinerary Spreadsheet, you will find exactly where we went, which trails we hiked, and where we camped. AND I have included all our back up plans and additional places we didn’t have enough time to visit, where we would have spent extra time and alternative hikes. Every place I could add a link with more information, I did! Every hike is linked to AllTrails and all the points of interest are linked to their websites to make planning your own adventure that much easier. I have included the GPS coordinates for every campsite AND back up sites that I had bookmarked but didn’t stay. The only thing absent from this spreadsheet is restaurants. I have included the few restaurants we did get food from, but we had priorates beyond eating out on this trip.
All this research took me countless hours over weeks and weeks to research, 5 weeks to experience it all and more weeks and weeks to get all the information into a handy spreadsheet for you!
If you have any questions, find a broken link, or just want to chat about adventure, please don’t hesitate to reach out! If you decide to follow all or part of this road trip route, please tag us on social media so we can follow along on your adventure.
A note about dispersed camping: Please verify land boundaries and regulations before setting up camp. Land boundaries and rules about where you are allowed to dispersed camp can change so double check them before heading out of cell range to camp. Gaia GPS is a great tool for verifying land boundaries.
Please practice Leave No Trace principals while recreating responsibly outdoors. More information about how to leave no trace can be found here.
